HERITAGE EDUCATION -The Somerset
Historical Center offers opportunities for Somerset County children as well as
those visiting from surrounding areas to learn about early agriculture and
related issues in western Pennsylvania. Roles include on-site demonstrator,
seasonal in-classroom demonstrations, behind the scenes prep work and many other
opportunities. Share some of your time, build an interest or skill you already
have, or learn something new with this volunteer job.
Elementary School Tutors – Volunteers are a great asset to children and
teachers. Numerous school districts welcome volunteers to work one-on-one or with small groups
of children to improve reading and math skills. Placement is available at Somerset,
Berlin, Meyersdale, North Star, Rockwood, Salisbury and Windber School Districts, and
also Head Start classrooms.
MEALS ON
WHEELS - Meals on Wheels program needs volunteers to deliver meals in
Rockwood, Stoystown, Hooversville, Boswell, Jennerstown, Hollsopple, Friedens,
Berlin, Davidsville, Meyersdale and Somerset areas. Meals on Wheels relies on
volunteers to operate. Drivers, carriers and substitutes welcome.
SOMERSET COUNTY
BLIND CENTER - If you enjoy shopping and other local activities this job is for you.
Center clients from the South Center Somerset facility and Windber area need volunteers to assist
them as they move through the store or attend the Mountain Playhouse. Call RSVP for details..
ESCORT
DRIVERS - The Area Agency on Aging medical transportation service
needs drivers with vehicles to transport area residents to in-county and
out-of-county trips. Accept only trips that suit your schedule. Expenses and
mileage are reimbursed. Call Connie for details.
RECEPTIONIST/OFFICE
SUPPORT - All of the following organizations welcome volunteers to expand
their mission and serve clients better through various in-office jobs: Veteran’s
Affairs, Next Step Center, American Cancer Society, Salvation Army, New Day –
Somerset Office, Somerset, Inc., Area Agency on Aging and Laurel Arts.
SOMERSET CHAMBER
OF COMMERCE - The Chamber needs weekend office hosts to provide
information to visitors and answer phone requests. Volunteers are scheduled
based on availability. Choose a set day each month or be a flexible
substitute. This is a great way to share your knowledge and enthusiasm about
Somerset County and surrounding areas.
LIBRARY
SUPPORTERS - Your local library needs help! The Somerset County,
Somerset Borough, Meyersdale and Windber libraries are all in need of additional
manpower to do any number of "no stress" tasks. Try one of the many jobs that
would greatly benefit your library. Recent reports have documented the lack of
funding for libraries, and volunteers stretch those valuable dollars. lend a
hand so libraries can continue to serve their constituents.
SALVATION
ARMY - The Somerset Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to serve
as program assistants for service projects and support roles. Interviewers
would be trained to assist low-income clients with applications and forms
necessary to determine appropriate resources. Food clerks are needed to
organize and restock shelves and make up bags and boxes for clients. Call RSVP

AREA AGENCY ON
AGING VOLUNTEER OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM
needs to expand. Volunteers are
trained to do on-site visits with residents at nursing homes and residential
care facilities. Volunteers might deal with questions about rights and
responsibilities or policies and procedures. A professional Ombudsman oversees
the program. Facilities are located in Addison, Berlin, Central City,
Confluence, Davidsville, Fort Hill, Friedens, Jerome, Meyersdale, Rockwood,
Salisbury, Somerset, Stoystown, Ursina, Wellersburg, and Windber.
AREA AGENCY
ON AGING APPRISE PROGRAM - Volunteers who like working with forms, applications, and numbers are
needed to assist their peers with Medicare and other insurance issues, as well as
rent/property tax rebates and PACE applications. Training for new volunteers is provided
periodically. New volunteers can shadow a trained volunteer and most work in teams.
Volunteers select one or more days a month to see people by appointments made by the
Agency at agency locations. For details call RSVP now.
