CENTER ACTIVITIES
Senior community service
centers offer consumers many different opportunities for socialization,
recreation and education. Agency center
staff plan special activities that include guest speakers, demonstrations,
films, picnics, trips, volunteer
dinners, holiday parties and arts or crafts projects.
Presentations on health and insurance issues, fire
safety, legal affairs and crime prevention are regularly offered by local experts from
the community.
Each center plans activities that are similar to the
interests of its own participants and community. Regular activities at all centers include
cards, exercise, dancing, shopping trips, and bingo.
Free blood pressure screening is offered each month
in centers. Twice a year, free blood cholesterol and
sugar screening are sponsored through area hospitals. Other health screenings scheduled periodically include
evaluations of lung functioning, eyesight and hearing. Flu shots are given by trained medical staff
annually.
County transportation service is regularly available both
to and from a consumer’s home. Transportation
is also provided for visits to other senior community centers located in
another part of the
county. Vehicles are able to accommodate
individuals who use wheelchairs.
Reservations for transportation to any center must be made, according to
the established procedures for the Somerset County Transportation System. Please call Community Action Partnership for
Somerset County/Tableland Services, Inc. at (814) 445-9628 or 1-800-452-0241.
